Need to make a hammer for a friend with some wrist/mass issues. Any suggestions on what steel to use, and why?

Re: Mostly related
04/13Unless there is some truely special design issues - hammers can be bought in a very wide range of masses. I suggest starting there.
Otherwise, I think any tool steel should do as only the faces need to be hard. On the other hand, I've never made a hammer, so what do I know? -

04/14I wouldn't even need to be a tool steel. A simple carbon steel would do (1095, 5160). Be cautious to bring the temper back after hardening the face(s).

04/22Thanks. Have refaced / hardened / retempered several. Just wasn't sure what to make them out of. Itermitten oil quench - one face then the other to black heat then a oragne (night color under minimal lighting) rod into the handle receiving hole and let stand.
Have some 4160 and 1084 1/4" rods , and 6 of these will give me a good rough shape to work from. A lazy twist should work well then.
